On this day in history in 1980, John Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman.

I always start the school day with a look at what happened on this day in history. This was the first time it was set to music. As I told the children, the words to the song are particularly appropriate during this festive season as we strive for peace and goodwill to all men.

Several of them noticed, I'm sure, that there were tears in their teacher's eyes when the song finished and he tried to segue smoothly into today's Maths lesson. Thankfully, they were too polite to comment.
