above the snowline

Joanna and I continue on our journeys of local exploration, increasing our fitness levels at the same time. Today we chose a walk from her book "KIrkmahoe Discovered" which took us up to the site of an old hill fort called the Mullach, above Dalswinton. I was pleased that we were going up  hill, and even on a rather dull day, the views were spectacular. On a bright clear day, they would be even better.
Here is Joanna near the summit. The last snowfall was almost a week ago, but this patch was in a sheltered, north facing spot.
We lingered on the summit long after we had finished our picnic of fruit tea and biscuits, unwilling to leave the view. Also Joanna said that she felt the place had a good feeling to it. We did try to imagine ourselves living up here1500 years ago, but that wasn't easy :-)
The walk guide had taken us past another "promontory fort" and noted that opposite it were a group of alder trees which were mentioned on old OS maps. I looked at an old map from the mid 19th century and there were definitely 4 trees at this site. If these are the same ones, they must be very long-lived! (I've included the trees and the map as extras - the group of trees is just by the well).
We also saw some beautifully made old gateposts, so I'll use up another couple of extras and include those, too.
All in all, a very satisfying walk. Thank you, Joanna!
