Strange wood

The city cut down trees from Kapteenskanmäki. The lumberjack (he sleeps all night and he works all day?) was clever enough to save this strange phenomenom.

The cable securing a lamppost goes right through the wood branch (or what is left of it). I can't figure out how that was formed.
