Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Scott & Peg

We handed the waiter my camera and hoped to capture the moment. I don't like "flash" photos, but I thought this was better than some flash photos I've seen.

Earlier today Peg sent me a text message. We had not communicated in months. After volleying one text after another back and forth, she suggested that the four of us meet for dinner this evening. They live in Orange County and we live just east in the Inland Empire. So we usually meet half way.

We've met these two the summer of 1981 when we all were at the same week of family camp on Catalina Island with our children. Over the years we've been pretty close for months and months, and a few times our circles have spun off in different directions. Lately our circles seldom seem to connect. Peg wanted to end the season of not connecting.

Scot owns his own pool maintenance business. He is also a musician and oversees an open mic night every Tuesday. He loves to sail on the ocean, and he also loves to cook.

Peg is a part-time community college geography instructor. This past May she earned her Ph.D. in Education from USC. She loves to fly airplanes and has even qualified to be a flight instructor. She is also a fabulous artist.

Together they have two grown sons and two grandchildren who both live in Texas.

We have traveled many miles with Scott & Peg. Possibly our favorite vacation was an 8-day journey on the American Queen Steamboat Paddlerwheeler from St. Louis to Pittsburgh. But actually, every trip with them has been a favorite. We've enjoyed San Francisco with them and a long weekend cruise in the Pacific NW. We traveled to Key West, Florida for their youngest son's wedding. We've also bicycled miles together on tandem bicycles.

When the two of us strolled away from the restaurant late this evening, Mr. Fun commented that "it was as though no time had passed since we were with them last."

Then I received a text from Peg that exclaimed, "I love how we pick up where we left off with you guys. We can share anything, and even if it's quiet for a few months--we all know we are still there. That's the best kind of friend to have."

It was a very good evening.
