The Huskisson Plinth, Princes Road, Liverpool 8
William Huskisson was the Liverpool MP from 1823 to 1830. When first in Parliament he had opposed the Slave Trade, but he changed his mind when, as Tory MP for Liverpool, he had many friends with connections in the plantations. He himself became Secretary of State for the Colonies and proposed the Consolidated Slave Law in 1826.
He died from wounds suffered from being run over by Stephenson's Rocket at the opening of the inaugural railway line between Liverpool and Manchester.
His statue was removed by activists in July 1982. I am told that it is now in the middle of a private housing estate in the centre of town.
Behind can be seen the Toxteth Synagogue, the Greek Orthodox Church and the Anglican Cathedral.
