H.G.Wells

This is a statue in Woking Town Centre of H.G.Wells who lived in Woking in 1895/96. It was here - on nearby Horsell Common - that he found the setting for the landing of the Martians in his  celebrated and much dramatised novel, The War of the Worlds. There is an English Heritage blue plaque on the house in Maybury Road where he lived. Not long after he arrived in Woking he married his second wife, Amy Robbins, and succeeded in establishing himself as a full-time author. There is a statue of a Martian tripod nearby which I shall post another day.
