High Bentham

While the weather was fine for walking, today, we really were pretty unlucky with our chosen route along the River Wenning, starting and ending in High Bentham. Whilst only four miles or so all in, it was ridiculously muddy, which meant it took quite a bit longer than expected.

That's not to say it wasn't pleasant enough. I always enjoy the Minx's company, and a mile and a half into the outward leg of our walk, heading east on the south side of the river, we came across this old place.

It must have been rather fine in its time, not only structurally but also for its view over the valley, taking in the upper slopes of Ingleborough on the far side. We spent a little time idly speculating on when the last inhabitant might have left the house. I wonder, did they stand on that front door step taking in the view for the last time?

Well, I finally finished 'The Vanishing Half', which I'm alarmed to see I first picked up at the end of August. It's not that it's not well written, I just don't think I really cared about any of the characters. I should have put it down, of course, but it was the last of four books recommended to me by a friend in the initial aftermath of Black Lives Matter. The first three were - in different ways - all excellent. I'm a bit sorry to have finished on this one.
