And, meanwhile back at the V&A, I pushed and shoved my way through the half term hordes to find this lovely, little (it's about 5" tall) ivory carving and it's dominant bottom. The full piece can be seen here.

It is carved elephant ivory and was made in about 1650 in Southern Germany by a follower of Leonhard Kern, the famous South German ivory carver of very small things. The piece is called Scene in a Bath House.
