Voice Coil

My backup hard drives seem to fail more often than the devices they are backups for.  There is something wrong with that.

One died this week (now replaced) and as usual I dismantled it to ensure I could destroy the disk platters properly.  I love the precision engineering in these things, and seeing how they fit together.

This is the arm with the heads on, showing the voice coil used to move it between tracks in the foreground, and the precision bearing it rotates around visible behind it.  You can just see the ribbon cable connecting the heads and voice coil to the controller off to the left too.

I think it looks a bit like a bottle opener...
