John Rattray

A new statue appeared on Leith Links last year to commemorate the 275th anniversary of the creation of 13 rules of golf. John Rattray was one of the signatories on the rules document and won the first ‘open’ golf tournament held on Leith Links in that year. He was also a surgeon and a Jacobite, who became surgeon general to Bonnie Prince Charles. He was captured at Culloden and sentenced to hang. However a golfing companion gamed his release and he won the tournament again in 1751. It seems he was a lucky man. This is also a Turf zone and we visited it on a ride around Leith. The extra, my last of the year is some street art from Leith.

Best on black.
