Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

An unexpected consequence of the 2020 pandemic

This last time last year, this very high sand dune was completely covered in marram grass and the large WW2 artillery emplacement  was standing firm on the dune face. Since Covid and the associated lock-downs arrived visitor numbers to the beach have increased dramatically. People enjoy climbing  to the top of the dunes but sadly the consequent erosion has been very severe. Much of the marram grass has been destroyed, the dune has become destabilised,  and the concrete emplacement is gradually sliding down the dune face towards the beach.

That pesky virus has a lot to answer for!
