Nelson's Monument, Birchen Edge

Not the greatest day for a walk, luckily the right clothing offered protection for a traverse around Chatsworth Park, climbing above the imposing house to walk through the high land to the east, crossing Dobbs Edge, Birchen Edge and Baslow Edge, before returning through the park and alongside the River Derwent.

Rain was always in the air so the decision was made to get high quickly and walk with the wind behind us, before turning and descending into Baslow, before the riverside walk into the teeth of the wind and the rain.  It was a good decision.

This is Nelson's Monument, overlooking the valley (though we couldn't see much of it by this time).  Later we passed Wellington's Monument above Baslow - it seems that victorious military characters were proclaimed and honoured around the estate.  In the extra are the Three Ships outcrop behind Nelson's Monument with the names of three of his ships hewn into the rocks, Victory, Defiance and Royal Soverin.
