No tui here this evening
Tui get nectar from the flax flowers; in the city there are other sources of nectar, and they do eat some soft fruit and even the odd insect. Elsewhere the flax flowers I see are dry and black. Along the south facing slope along which the Arch Hill Reserve walkway passes, the flax flowers are still colourful and I guess nectarful also.
This afternoon I not only did not see any tui, I didn’t hear even one. They were much more noticeable in the city during lockdown.
