The Christmas Story
The Christmas Story
‘Get home.’ It was pretty much the only thought that had kept her going for weeks now. ‘Get home.’ The cold of the night had almost taken her breath away and her sleep had been shallow at best. Now, as the late winters dawn graced her with a kiss of sunlight, she thought ‘not far to go.’
She had long since learnt that the hardest step was the first one so pulling herself to her feet from the church doorway was no hardship. It was, rather, a necessity. Now, standing, she gathered her meagre belongings and stole out of the village the same way she had arrived, that is in absolute obscurity.
Once she has been a someone. Now she was less than a nobody.
‘Get home,’ her mantra ran, ‘’get home.’
