I headed down to South Ronaldsay to look for a white-billed diver that's been hanging about St Margarets Hope. The species has been renamed 'yellow-billed loon' by the UK taxonomists, but that hasn't been adopted by most bird-watchers here (yet). I actually thought I saw it from the bus but stayed on (I'd paid all the way!) and got off at the village, then walked the shore back to where it was. I got a few long-range shots but wasn't certain it wasn't a great northern diver. I sent a shot to the local birder who first reported it and see what he thinks. Other birds included two or three short-eared owls, wigeon, snipe, curlews etc. I reached Churchill Barrier #4, then along the shore to Rumley Point, then back to catch the bus at Ayre of Cara.
