New Zealand lost one of its most important and intense artists today.
Ralph Hotere passed away today aged 81.
He painted what he believed in .That was a fair and just New Zealand.He stood up for social issues and portrayed some of the countries most divisive historical events.
The dahlia is called "Deep South".It seemed appropriate.He was born in the North Island but lived most of his life in Otago,the deep south.
