A Walk In The Park
Taken on today's Tier 4 stroll... The Chinese summer house known as The Pagoda in Victoria Park, Mile End, east London is an exact replica of the original Victorian pagoda first displayed in Hyde Park in 1842 and sold to Victoria Park for £110 in 1847. The Pagoda was placed on an island before any bridges were built and local east end children, who had never seen such a sight, thought the structure was home to a Chinese family who would sneak out at night to feed the ducks and swans.
The original fell into disrepair and suffered World War II bomb damage and was demolished in the 1950s.
The new pagoda was built in 2012 at a cost of £200,000 along with a Chinese bridge which James Pennethorne had included in his original design in 1841.
