I wonder if anyone knows what this is?

It's actually Silica Gel beads.   The yellow ones contain an indicator that shows when the moisture absorbency is exhausted.  At that point they can be 'recharged' in the oven.

I use them to keep 3D printer filament dry as it is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture over time.   In that case it becomes very difficult to print with.
