At Last, At Last, The Sun, Aylesford
After days and days of oppressively grey and freezing cold weather the sun finally appeared, and it was so glorious to see it again. Today started with a short run (our one permitted period of outdoor exercise) which I actually enjoyed despite it feeling like my fingers were going to fall off. To get today's images I took a slightly elongated walk to get essential supplies in the hope of seeing an image or two. Luckily, the light was still so gorgeous and I was in the right place at the right time to see this woman and her dog in the gap between the dark shadows of the trees. The extra is called "Ray Of Light".
It's been an unbelievable, unnerving, scary, bewildering, troubling and sad few days. It seems as if Covid is now out of control in parts of the UK, particularly London (where the Mayor has declared a major incident). The loss of life and the crushing responsibility laid at the door of NHS staff is totally heartbreaking.
Of course, the other seismic event was the attack on the Capitol by a marauding mob of Trump supporters. It was jaw-dropping, depressing and stomach churning all at the same time, while being totally predictable due to Trump's disgusting politics. At last (but far too late) some commentators are calling him out for what he is - a fascist and a moral coward. He didn't even contact his Vice President Mike Pence while he was under attack because he had rubber stamped Biden's victory.
A brilliant article in The Guardian by Rebecca Solnit sums it up all perfectly and features a prescient quote by the political scientist Frank
Wilhoit - Conservatism (you could easily substitute Trump or Boris here) consists of exactly one proposition - there must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect".
