The Sun had a Halo....

.... the biggest one I have ever seen this morning. Normally you just see a smaller arc above the forest as in the extra. This is a phenomenon that usually occurs in the coldest part of the winter here when there is high cirrus clouds which are made of tiny, ice crystals. Sunlight through the ice crystals causes the light to split, or be refracted. When at just the right angle, 22 degrees, it causes us to see the halo (for the physicists among you!


Stopping to take photos when you are cross country skiing in “the freezer” is a sport in itself to keep warm!
