Cemetery
Apparently there were some huge trees removed and the the low winter sun conjured up golden light on the gravestones of the Jewish graveyard of our village. The graveyard is protected by a high wall and you have to and you have to pick up the key at the community.
Normally it is a rather dark place. There are more photos on this page.
There was also a link about the Jewish history in this village. It is only in German, sorry.
There was a Jewish community since 1770. In 1900 5% of the inhabitants were Jewish (85 persons)
"In 1933 there were still 34 Jewish people living in the area (1.7% of 1,997 inhabitants). In the following years some of the Jewish community members moved away or emigrated due to the consequences of the economic boycott, increasing disenfranchisement and reprisals. The synagogue was burned down during the November pogrom in 1938 (see below); The apartments of the Jewish families were attacked, demolished and looted by SA men and others"
"The last community leader, Ludwig May, died on January 4, 1939 as a result of the abuse, his wife Sidonie née Böhm was deported via Darmstadt in 1942 and perished. Of the people who emigrated from Groß-Bieberau, six found a place in the USA and several in Argentina (from these a Torah scroll was rescued from the synagogue; it was later used in the Jewish community of Avigdor). One person emigrated to Holland."
"Of the Jewish people who were born in Groß-Bieberau and / or who lived there for a long time, died during the Nazi era (information from the lists of Yad Vashem, Jerusalem and the information in the "Memorial Book - Victims of Persecution of Jews under National Socialist Tyranny." in Germany 1933-1945 "; the list is incomplete): Siegfried Haas (1859), Clara Herzfeld née Meyer (1889), Mina (Minna) Jonas née May (1890), Eva Joseph née Haas (1860), Bertha Levi née Ackermann (1887), Amalia Levi (), Ludwig Levi (), Mayer (Meier, Meyer, Maier) Levi (1881), Ludwig May (1878), Sidonie May née Böhm (1886), Flora Mayer née. Haas (1878), Gertrud Amalie Neidhardt née Marx (1901), Rosa Neumann née Haas (1858), Lina Rothschild née Meyer (1893), Rosa (Rosalie) Schack née May (1875), Mina Stein née Meyer (1886), Lena (Lina) Strimpel née Hirsch (1876)."
If you scroll down you can see their ID cards and learn more about their fait.
And now the Nazis rise again, worldwide. I'm afraid!
