Cambridge Dave's 2021

The Mathematical Bridge

I was up early this morning and passed over one of Cambridge's best known landmarks on my daily exercise: The Mathematical Bridge that spans the 'mighty' River Cam and links the component parts of Queen's College.  The very word 'mathematical' brings back childhood memories of my total inadequacy in anything relating to Maths. There is a popular story that it was designed and built by Sir Isaac Newton without the use of nuts or bolts when he wasn't playing around with apples and gravity. This appears unlikely, however, as he died in 1727 which was 22 years before it was actually built. Indeed, it has been rebuilt twice since, most recently in 1905.
