Rhubarb!
Yet another day of pottering around the house. Lovely to see the new rhubarb coming through. I watched JoJo Rabbit this afternoon, a great film and an amazing performance by Roman Griffin Davis who played the little boy, I'd recommend it.
Day 303 / Day 8 of Lockdown 3 (for my record only)
UK deaths up 1,243 to 83,203 (revised basis), with 45,533 new cases, 35,075 patients in hospital (a new record), 3,363 on ventilation and 4,240 new admissions. New cases are coming off the peak now thankfully, but are still higher than pre-xmas levels. Excess deaths in the UK for 2020 were nearly 91,000 more than expected against the average of the last 5 years, that was a 15% rise and the highest since WWII. The briefing today by Pritti Patel focused on stressing the need for compliance with rules and guidance and the increasing enforcement by the Police and the impact on the NHS of non-compliance. The Nightingale hospital in Excel is now open for non-Covid patients. All four major supermarket chains have now said they'll ban people who refuse to wear a mask unless for a valid medical reason and Sainsburys has said it will challenge those shopping in groups. Whilst this is good, it should have always been the case alongside restricting numbers and banning shoppers who repeatedly endanger others. John Lewis has suspended click and collect services and paused in-home services. People coming into England from abroad will have to show a negative Covid test from the previous 72 hours from Friday - about time too! This is in addition to the 10 days self-isolation required and will also apply in Wales and Scotland at a date to be announced. The Governor of the BoE believes unemployment has risen to c6.5% or 2.2m people.
