Starving....

After another big snowfall overnight and low temperatures ensured this poor Heron has been unable to find food for more than three weeks now. It had made its way into this burn and I came upon it unexpectedly. It was half a metre away from me, hunched and reluctant to move. I carried on and several  hours later it was still there, looking even more bedraggled. I decided to try to help it, knowing they are very unhappy close to man. I rushed home for a tin of sardines and returning about twenty minutes later, managed to encourage it to the edge of the bog up against a fence. I quickly opened the tin and threw some fish towards it. It was terrified and tried to move away, however, I lurched off , cutting my finger on the tin as one leg went knee deep in icy water. Some way off, smelling fishy and holding a bleeding finger aloft, I looked back and was amazed and delighted to see it eating the sardines. It was all worth it!!
Hope it makes it through another difficult weather day and will check on it tomorrow.
