Project 365 day 14: rainy Thursday
I didn't even want to open the back door today. I took some photos of the valley and this one of the hedgerow and field beyond the bathroom window, through the rain-speckled glass. It is intensely green at present, even in the winter gloom, after several weeks of near-constant rain. In summer 1979, when I agreed to my boyfriend's suggestion that we could hitch and camp around the west of Ireland for almost no money, I learned that if a landscape is famed for its green-ness, there must be a reason... Waking in the early hours on a hillside above Dingle to find a stream running through the tent was the final straw, after a night sheltering from a thunderstorm in a vermin-infested haystack and a series of other soggy misadventures. We spent all our remaining money on a train back to the ferry, and, sadly, have never returned to the beautiful west of Ireland. We are still married though, and live in a valley in the North Downs which is very green in winter and parched yellow-brown in summer.
