Local History
We don't often go to Moat Park, even though it's within walking distance from home. It contains a Motte, Church and Mausoleum and has an interesting history. There has been a Church on this site since 1306, but the original structure was destroyed by Edward Bruce (younger brother of Robert the Bruce). Edward became a High King of Ireland. The current building, St Elizabeth's Church, was built in 1842. The Mausoleum in the background is apparently the tallest of its kind in Ulster. The Motte has survived well. It's amazing what's on your doorstep!.. It was just as well we went out early, as the weather deteriorated in the afternoon.
