The tiny and the not so...
The stamp may be pretty tiny but the oil rig it shows probably wasn't very small...
Today's stamp is a 17p was issued in 1986 to celebrate Industry Year. I find it odd that in 1986 someone thought that digging old and gas out of the ground (and in the case just buring the gas off) was a clever thing to do? Or that the incandescent light bulb was still that clever?
I remember in primary school worrying about the environment and certainly by the time that this stamp was issued burning oil was clearly seen to be a bad thing and there were more efficient alternatives to the incandescent lamp. On a more positive note at least the lamp pictured here has a proper bayonet fit and not the nasty Edison screw fit.
The others in the series are a thermometer and pharmaceuticals, steel making and a garden hoe and finally a field of wheat and a loaf for farming. Ironic how things change the UK has pretty much run out of oil, there is no steel industry anymore (other than special stuff), but pharma is more important that ever and we still want bread.
Another busy day at work, not sure where the day went, but it's all over now!
