Arichonan (Àirigh Chonoin)

Up until 1848 this was a peaceful small typical crofting village in Argyll. On Whitsunday 1848, Neil Malcolm of Poltalloch terminated the leases of the people living there and ordered they be removed to make way for the more profitable sheep. The tenants refused to move so the police were called in and many ended up in Inveraray Jail! Once the people were evicted, their house roofs were set alight and the stones removed to build this massive sheep pen, Factors (manager) house and new barns (first 3 photos)
The remaining photos is the ruinous state of the houses of the evicted people. This place as I have said before often leaves me annoyed at the power of the rich & how they treat the poor. Yet in 2021, I see the Westminster incumbents do something similar, cutting Universal credit, raising taxes and refusing to feed the poor's school children. Wealth indeed corrupts!
