Eureka!
When I was a kid there was a largish (we thought so) patch of blackberry bushes near our house that we used to raid at this time of year. We felt more than a little proprietorial about them, like we had exclusive use or something. That was until all the land around was filled with houses and the blackberries made way for residential sprawl. Mum made pies with them, and enough jam to last a year.
I know they are a weed and this lot will likely get ripped up and sprayed and generally gotten rid of, but they are ripening now and the nostalgia was hitting and I just had to go looking with a bucket in hand.
