Dead Mill

This old industrial structure has the rather morbid name of Dead Mill. Local legend has it that the name derived from the use of the building as a morgue for soldiers killed during the battle of Lansdown in 1643 during the English Civil War.
A Fulling Mill was operating from this site from the 14th Century. The large waterwheel which drove the grinding process was destroyed with much of the building in a catastrophic fire in 1900.
It is probably just that the building sits in a spot shaded by rising ground but the air always feels chilly here.
