Going coastal

Those big, fluffy “proper” snowflakes had started to fall as I was putting the coats and boots in the car.

It gave me pause for thought as to whether the roads would be safe for carting the wee ones out to the coast to collect their big sister, but for nothing else at least the drive would be interesting and once again, a welcome change of scenery.

The day had already begun well with a second visitor in as many days, as Simmo stopped by on her way to do her shopping to drop-off my birthday present “from Poundland” (albeit with strict instructions not to open it before my birthday). Nice to see a familiar smiling face and compare notes on the tedium of it all, but really tough not to be able to reach out and give her a hug.

The drive out to collect The Eldest was absolutely beautiful with the snow seemingly having fallen a lot thicker out west. My only regret was that I wasn’t able to pull over to take some photos, but with the conditions a little precarious and conscious of my precious cargo of wee ones, it would have seemed a little silly.

Needing some supplies for home and being a little early, we stopped at the local supermarket and picked up some logs for the fire alongside some pastries to munch (I had forgotten to bring their snacks). Having then collected The Eldest, we made our way back to Bardsea and spent a very pleasant hour, running and jumping about in the thin covering of snow whilst finding just enough to have a snowball fight.

I’m getting a little better at just letting them roam free and not allowing my enhanced parental anxiety to run riot over them falling over into a water course or getting wet feet on a cold day. It’s ridiculous feeling like this, it really is. They’re small children! They’re supposed to run, jump, fall over, get wet, get cold etc. that’s how they learn!!

The saying goes that “a change is as good as a rest” and as ever with these clichés, there is something in that as we all felt a little lighter from our excursion.

That was until we had fish n chips followed by brownie and ice cream for tea, which lead to a not entirely unpleasant heavy and full feeling.
