2016-09-03 (Day 247) Culros
We went to visit Culross today. Culross is a Royal Burgh in Fife, in the 16th and 17th an important port for the salt and coal industries.
This statue is the Mercat Cross (Market Cross) in the village. In days gone past, Royal permission was required to hold a market, and places permitted to do so had to indicate their privilege with a statue such as this. The unicorn was a symbol of the Scottish royal family, indicating the Royal permission granted to hold a market.
Fans of the TV series Outlander may recognise this statue, as the village was used to represent the fictional town of Cranesmuir in the series
