WILD TURKEY

It's the coldest day of the season so far....it's -5°F. (-20.5°C.) and critters are doing what they can to warm up a bit.

These are wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) roosting in the sun on the side of a local moraine...a large hill of gravel plowed up by the last wave of glacial activity in this area some 10,000 years ago. Once warmed up by the sun's rays, they will leave the sheltered area and will likely scratch through the snow to look for mast (fallen nuts...acorns, etc.) or move to a less snow covered field and scratch for fallen grain (corn, wheat, oats, rye, soybeans, etc.) left over from harvesting.

How many can you see? Do a count and then check the EXTRA photo which has a small yellow triangle placed on each bird. Look in LARGE.
