Navel Oranges
Today's the day ……………………… for a bit of a rant
I made some very special marmalade today - and I'm not just saying that because it's homemade.
It's all to do with the very special oranges that the marmalade was made from. They arrived here a couple of days ago direct from the grower - Maria Luisa Henriquez Santana - who farms at Pozo la Higuera on the border between Murcia and Almeria in Spain. Her farm is just one of a whole group of growers who have got together in a Crowdfarming Venture to bring their produce directly to the customer.
And what a joy it was to make marmalade from these oranges that were so sweet and juicy and because they are grown organically, there's no worry that the skins have been sprayed with some noxious chemical. But you would never find such fruit in your local supermarket because they are all different sizes and weights. You would never be able to find fruit this fresh, picked at the right time and that hadn't been sitting in a chilled warehouse for weeks.
I could go on at length about how brainwashed we've all become into thinking that we need to have what supermarkets have decided we want?! It's a sad fact that most people in the 'developed' world eat too much of what is usually the worst kind of food.
But end of rant! I'm looking forward to breakfast tomorrow morning with freshly-squeezed orange juice followed by toast and marmalade …………………….
