Desk
My photo last Tuesday was an office chair. Today, it’s the desk.
There’s a trend on You Tube for people to make videos about their productive desk set-ups. I am not sure what that means. The person is productive not the desk and, honestly, you can spend more time tinkering with a set-up than working at the desk. Still, this is my productive desk set-up.
In March 2014 I had been working at home for a couple of years. My desk set-up was not productive in any way but, mainly, it was not that comfortable. I decided a standing desk might be a good idea. At the time I couldn’t find an affordable desk that could be raised so I bought a Varidesk. It’s a metal stand which sits on top of the desk and can be raised and lowered as needed. It’s heavy. When it arrived I got stuck half way up the stairs; I didn’t have the strength to get to the top with the box and feared it would slide down with me holding it. Eventually, I got it to into the room and on the desk.
It was bad timing. Within about 6 weeks of ordering it I’d started a new job. I worked at home for the new employer for a couple of months before they opened a central London office. The stand-up desk was hardly used after that but continued to sit on top of the desk.
Almost exactly six years after it arrived, now March 2020, we were all told to work from home for ‘a few weeks’. I’ve been using the stand function of that desk every working day since. I’d throughly recommend a standing desk to anybody.
