Yellow Brain Fungus

Tremella mesenterica, the Yellow Brain Fungus, is mainly seen in winter in England as the weather has to be wet.  It grows on rotted wood, especially oak, which is where I found it.  It's a jelly fungus and it felt repulsively wobbly when I prodded it.  Tremella means trembling.  Mesenterica comes from two Greek words, meso- meaning middle, and -enteron meaning intestine.  In other words, it looks more like a middle intestine than a brain.  You couldn't make this stuff up!
