CHVRCHES
Best night out in a long time, and one of the best gigs I've been to. Went to see CHVRCHES, a slow electro-pop trio from Glasgow in Bristol.
I've been a huge fan ever since my mate Tom introduced me to them at new years, and have since listened to as much of them as I could get my ears on. They quickly assailed to my most played tracks ever on iTunes, with the single 'Lies' right at the top.
As such, I was pretty excited to see them live. I'd bought two tickets, originally with the hope that Tom could make it, but due to his scandi commitments he couldn't make it. I took my brother instead, who was happy to come to a gig.
Turned up before doors opened, saw the guys outside (Iain Cook also produces another favourite group of the moment, Sparrow and the Workshop) but I was too shy to say hi, so we went for I cider at the nearby cider boat and had an Old Bristolian. At 8.5%, this is cider with a capital Z.
The support turned out to be the fantastic Glaswegian shoegaze/electro group Conquering Animal Sounds . Good they were too, somehow managing to navigate the myriad of wires and pedals that they had a ranged about the small stage.
Chvrches were the main even though, and they put on an amazing show. The lead singer Lauren Mayberry has an amazing voice, beautifully stained with the Glasgow accent, and hold over the stage with a beauty that makes it hard to look anywhere else.
Curfew meant no encore, or maybe we didn't shout loud enough. Happy though.
Also interesting to mention the venue, Thekla, is on a converted boat. Gurt lush.
