Candlemas

“Today is Candlemas, the festival which falls 40 days after Christmas and in medieval England marked the official end of Christmas. It was also when Christmas decorations made with greenery were taken down, and in a return to ancient tradition English Heritage encouraged people to leave Christmas decorations up until Candlemas this year. The festival was also when weather predictions were made for the rest of winter: “If Candlemas Day be fair and bright/ Winter will have another fight./ If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain,/ Winter won’t come again.”
