From early morning clear-out of old books, here is one of the maps in the 1903 Great Central Railway time tables.  In the 'Continental Arrangements' section the Grimsby - Hamburg route is described as 'Average Passage 32 hours'.  Disappointingly there is no further information on the St Petersburg route other than being marked on this map.  If the speed was similar to the Hamburg ship then the 1225 miles from Grimsby to St Petersburg must have taken four or five days.
