An Old Remedy

I used to work in Farnworth, a town which is now part of Bolton. Before the First World War it had 46 cotton mills, mostly specialising in fine spinning. It had a progressive council which was a pioneer in slum clearance and house building. During the Spanish flu epidemic the council wanted to provide subsidised whiskey.
