Through sun, wind and rain .....
One day, I’ll count the number of memorial benches set out along our stretch of coast, poignant reminders of happy holidays or retirement years together, where now the one survivor is left to sit alone, or where a family might return to remember treasured parents.
These line a viewing area looking out to sea, a place to sit and rest and muse, though often, like today, they wait unused. Occasionally, a bunch of garage flowers in their cellophane wraps are wedged into a corner, or a Christmas wreath left withering into spring.
Here, however, a heart of driftwood has been attached, padlocked in place like a love lock on a bridge, a symbol of enduring love. It’s been here for some time, and I knew it would be my Blip today.
The title comes from the inscription on the bench - love enduring through all weathers - and I think of the couple who I hope grew old together, sitting somewhere just like this, looking out to sea.
‘Love is not about staring at each other, but staring off in the same direction.’
