Cut flowers

I don't much care for cut flowers. An illusion of life - the brightness of their colours already on the wane the moment they're snipped from their source. The gaiety they suggest is a fallacy, revealed within hours as the first petals fall.

(extract from my novel The Sky is Not Blue which will be published by Mad Bear Books this spring)
