St Davids well
Hiding from one of the many vicious squalls that swept up the valley all day.
St Davids well is on a shallow natural spring. St Cuthbert is the first recorded hermit residence and he built the stone pool around it. A local princess accused him of seducing her. Being a good saint he prayed about it and the earth swallowed her up! He left his cave in a hurry to escape her angry dad!
The David its name is from was chief of the Menzies clan in the 15th century. He gave it all up, to become a hermit living in the caves up here.
