Medieval Tower
Tier 5 - Day 44
Another photo from Ewell Village.
This is the Tower which which was added in 1450 to the 13 Century church of St Mary the Virgin. There were two reasons for the demolition of that church (apart from the bell tower). The first being it was in such a terrible state of repair that it would come down whether demolished under control or allowed to collapse. The other was Sir George Glyn, both the Rector and Lord of the Manor in the 19th Century, resented his parishoners' carts all passing his rectory/manor house on their way to Sunday services, so he had a new church built further away!
