More burning

This morning was deemed a good one for burning moorland and I went out with the RSPB to Rendall Moss, where we wreaked devastation.
Not really. We burned a few small areas of old heather which will encourage new growth and hunting by hen harrier, merlin and short-eared owl. Rendall Moss is important for breeding curlew, a species in steep decline all over the UK. Orkney is a stronghold, but even here it is becoming less common.
A couple of times the flames jumped beyond the firebreaks, you had to be on your toes. We had the Argo vehicle with us with a water bowser on the back and used it to soak the borders to keep the flames within.
