Scene change
When collecting Carmen in recent weeks, we’ve headed for a walk over Bardsea.
This time however, with the rain falling and the tide appearing to still be partially in, it wasn’t quite feasible, so we thought we would take a drive on the Barrow coast road for a change of scenery.
It was also a good chance to catch up with Carmen about her week and what she’s been up to, so we nattered away with the wee ones chipping in about their gossip. Eventually, we took a turn off to a little village called Rampside and discovered this strange obelisk, which a little googling has revealed to be Rampside Lighthouse aka “The Needle”. Built in 1875, it is the only surviving example of 13 such beacons built around Barrow during the late 19th century to aid vessels into the town's port.
Driving a little further down the road, we reached the tip of the peninsula and found the view in extras looking out onto Piel Island. The Eldest told me that the landlord of the pub on the island is also the King of the island. Naturally, I assumed that she was talking piffle, but another quick googling has provided corroboration on that fact too!
I responded to these new facts by introducing my youngest two to the new Muppets film which came out a few years ago and I was reminded of this belter, which feels like it could have been written for me.
Every day is a school day…
Stay healthy.
