The former village 'Gildhall' has now been sold
This house dates from 1478 and would originally have had a thatched roof. It belonged for quite a number of years to a distinguished gentleman from London, as his country retreat, but last year became 'surplus to [his] requirements' so was put on the market. I have just noticed today that it sports a 'sold' notice.
As the village Gildhall it would have operated as a kind of social club centuries ago - no doubt only for the upper echelon of society. Internally there are wonderful oak beams and a large inglenook fireplace. At some time it was converted into three cottages; and in Victorian times it served as the village workhouse.
This house went on the market with a guide price of £630,000. I wonder what it has sold for?
