Captain's Log

Oak for the new boat

The wood used so far has been a tropical hardwood called iroko, not unlike teak but grown much more sustainably.  It will also be used for the planking. When the planks are in place, the soft wood moulds will need to be removed, but before they are timbers as they are called in the trade (we laymen might call them ribs, for that is what they look like) will be steamed and bent into place and fixed to the planks.

This is what this English oak is for. It is in the shed next door and smells so much nicer than the iroko.
