Natural spring

The Lomond hills have an abundance of natural springs. The main one is at Scotlandwell where the water bubbles up out of the sand in the well. (not the one in my photo)
When the Romans were in this area as long ago as 84AD they probably stopped at this well to rest and ‘take the waters’. A hospital was established on the site by the Red Friars in 1250 and the well became a popular destination for pilgrims, one of whom was Robert the Bruce who was hoping for a cure for his leprosy. The waters were believed to cure a wide range of afflictions.

The well is down a very short lane which runs off the main road through Scotlandwell, almost opposite Leslie Road. It is signposted from the main road. The present structure over the well was built around 1858 as part of general improvements in the village.
