Distant Cousins

Not often do I go out with something in mind for a photograph, more usually preferring to look, take notice and react. Today though, I thought I should take advantage of the blank canvas that snow cover and overcast skies present. There aren't many places nearby with unobstructed views where I could relate near and distant subjects, but this is one.

I reduced the contrast as much as I could, leaving only a few wisps of grass in the foreground. This image is as much about the relationship between the trees, as it is about empty space. The central one is always going to attract attention because of its position and isolation, so I tried to make it lighter to balance the larger, darker foreground tree.

A detail maybe, but I noticed the little rise beneath the nearest tree with grasses on it, which seemed significant. In an image with such narrow tones, slight changes make big differences.
